Art Walk On Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., over 80 artists from around the country will have booths at the Coronado Ferry Landing displaying works ranging from painting and photography to pottery, wood, glass and jewelry. Admission is free. Musical entertainment, interactive art activities and a free shuttle bus to other Coronado sites will be available both days. Over 10,000 people are expected to attend this year. The Coronado Art Walk, now in its fifth year, is a major fundraiser for the Coronado Historical Association.

A variety of art media will be on display. Stelios Paraskevas, a talented East Coast jewelry and wearable art designer whose work has been featured in “O,” The Oprah Magazine, is participating in the Coronado Art Walk for the first time, bringing many of his most intricate pieces fashioned from copper wire. Larisa Thaney creates “organic art” compositions with real dried leaves, flowers, plants and tree bark, after carefully preserving the natural colors and shapes of the materials.
The distinctive pottery styling of popular local craftsman Eric Rempe, incorporating forms and images from the natural world, will again be available for visitors to enjoy and purchase. He has been working in clay for more than 20 years and teaches ceramics full-time at Coronado High School. Jim Nix, a retired federal firefighter from North Island NAS and a California landscape artist, does paintings that capture the natural beauty of the region, from the ever-changing shoreline to the immutable hills and trails of the backcountry.
Orange County photographer Bill Johnson is returning with his stunning seascapes and other artistic nature images for Coronado Art Walk 2010. His photographs are often shot in isolated places revealing unusual views of rocky ridgelines, ocean waves pounding steep cliffs, and desert sands and rocks.
The Rad Hatter, Awesome Artist, Dick Blick and other interactive art stations will stimulate the creativity in everyone. F.O.C.U.S. (Friends of Children United Society) will appear with a project called “Send Sunshine to Soldiers.” They will be asking children to create a greeting card for a service person overseas.
Kids and adults may try their hand at weaving at the San Diego Creative Weavers’ Guild booth, while volunteers from the San Diego Chapter of Stitches from the Heart will be demonstrating how they knit tiny caps for premature babies around the country. Anyone wishing to learn a few stitches will have a willing teacher..
Musical entertainment is an important facet of the outdoor event every year. This year, six different groups will perform on the main stage over the two days. Returning by popular demand are Tokeli and the Bill Magee Blues Band. Also performing this year will be the Crown City Jazz Band, Breez’n, Sundance and The Sidekicks.
The Coronado Ferry Landing on San Diego Bay is a picture-perfect setting for the art and music celebration. Visitors will find ample parking available but for anyone wishing to forgo their cars for the day, San Diego Harbor Excursion will be ferrying pedestrians and bicyclists across the bay from two locations hourly: the Broadway Pier at the Embarcadero and the Fifth Avenue Landing near the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel (fees apply). A free bus will shuttle visitors up and down Orange Avenue to other shopping and dining spots, the beach or the Hotel Del Coronado for additional sight-seeing.
The Unified Port of San Diego is a major underwriter of Coronado Art Walk 2010. Other sponsors are providing the interactive art activities, music and transportation. All proceeds benefit the Coronado Historical Association, which operates the Coronado Museum of History and Art and the Coronado Visitor Center.
